Wippies G Lite & Big G network disks

G Lite is free-of-charge network disk space in which Wippies users can store their digital pictures, documents and other files. Setting up the service is easy and requires no UNIX skills. The service includes an automatically generated image gallery, optional encryption for folders, the possibility to use the service as a virtual hard disk in your machine, and an automatic backup service. Transferring files to and from the server is easy, and you can do this with a FTP program, browser or by connecting the network disk to your operating system as a virtual hard disk.

Big G is like its little brother G Lite, but a hundred times bigger and fee-based.

Setting up the disk space service

To set up your own Wippies G Lite or Big G service, you first have to open your own Wippies e-mail addresshere After opening the e-mail address you can logon my.wippies.com administration page. Use the same username and password as you would for your Wippies e-mail address. Once you’ve logged on, click on the left side of the page below the General heading the link Add service order and click the appropriate product link. Follow the instructions on the page. NOTE! You’ll get the username and password you need to administer your Wippies hard disk account. Remember to save them! No match Verkkolevysi osoite on muotoa http://tunnus.wippiespace.com . Your network disk address is http://tunnus.wippiespace.com

Administration

You can administer your Wippies account via the my.wippies.com administration page. Click on the left-hand side the link G Lite administration from where you can choose if you want to view site traffic, change your password, create directories or change their user privileges. You cannot delete directories this way. Instead you have to use a FTP program or your operating system.

Administration Directory administration

Click on the administration page G Lite administration link, and you can now create new subdirectories, change access privileges to existing directories, or modify their password protection. A subdirectory is always created under the activated main directory. Directories have three types of access privileges.

Open to public
The directory and its contents are open to the public. If your service or account contains sensitive material, this choice is not recommended. The directory is visible on the public directory list.

Full protection
Access to the directory and its contents is banned from everyone who visit your public Wippies site, including yourself. We recommend this if your directory contains material you want no one to get their hands on. The directory is not visible on the public directory list.

Username/Password
If the directory has a username and password, the directory is visible to other users but its contents can be accessed only by entering the correct username and password. If, for example, you want your friend to access the folder, you can create a username and password for the folder and email the username to your friend.

Moving files: FTP

You can transfer files to the G Lite or Big G network disks by dragging and dropping or by using an FTP program. Popular FTP programs for Windows are CuteFTP, SmartFTP and FlashFXP. Different operating systems support numerous FTP programs, so we recommend that you try a couple and choose the one that works the best for you. Use the FTP program to contact directly your network disk address, which is in the form usernamewippiespace.com You obtained the necessary logon usernames and passwords when you created the service. When you have opened the data transfer between your home computer and the network disk, you only have to drag and drop the file(s), in the FTP program usually between open windows.

Moving files: Internet browser and operating system

You have to connect to the network hard disk before transferring files. You can write ftp://tunnus.wippiespace.com in the browser’s address bar, after which you enter your username and password. Depending on the browser’s settings, the connection to the server may work or not. Check that the ACT or PASV settings are activated for the browser. If either one is activated but no connection can be formed, try activating the other setting. If the connection works, a new window will open in the operating system, which shows the network disk’s directory tree. Now you can drag and drop files between windows.

Using the network disk as a virtual hard disk

If you want to use the network hard disk daily when using your home computer, but don’t want to open a connection to the network disk, you can connect the disk to your operating system. See below for instructions for the two most common operating systems. Because the connection is formed using the WebDAV protocol, port 80 is used for data transfer. This protocol is also used for data transfer in the HTTP protocol – that is, for browsing websites. That’s why you don’t have to change your firewall settings to use this service.

Microsoft Windows
Open Own Computer with right mouse button and choose Connect network workstations Choose the right network station code and then enter the network disk address http://usernamewippiespace.com in the appropriate field Click the Ready button and enter your username and password for the network hard disk.

Apple OS X
Activate Finder Choose from the top menu Go and Connect to server You can also activate Finder and press the key combination Apple-K Enter the service address http://tunnus.wippiespace.com and press Connect If everything works out, OS X should ask for your password. The network disk is visible as a virtual disk in Finder.
